Water Responsibility Statement

Clean water is vital for humans, nature, and the economy. The quantity and quality of water are also important factors in ensuring the functioning of Nokian Tyres’ operations.

As our Environmental, safety and quality guideline states, Nokian Tyres commits to environmental responsibility, which includes consuming and managing water sustainably.

To fulfill our promise, Nokian Tyres commits to the following:
  • Complying with laws and regulations, as well as the requirements of our customers.
  • Assessing our impacts and risks regularly: Water risk assessments for our production sites have been conducted using the WWF’s water risks filters, and they are updated every three years. The assessments confirm that Nokian Tyres’ water-related risks are minor and that the company does not operate in water-stressed areas.
  • Securing water sustainability in our supply chain: Nokian Tyres Supplier Code of Conduct expects that suppliers treat wastewater appropriately and strive to prevent contamination of storm water runoff when appropriate. Suppliers are encouraged to avoid excessive consumption of water. Water-related topics are included in supplier environmental and sustainability audits.
Key elements of our water efficiency program:
  • We target to reduce renewable ground water and municipal (third party) water use in our factories by a minimum of 1 percent annually. We continuously assess our water use to identify opportunities for efficiency improvements and reducing water consumption.
  • Minimizing the withdrawal of freshwater and recycling water whenever possible.
  • Using cooling water in tire manufacturing processes environmentally efficiently: municipal water is mainly used for process cooling in a circular system, and the cooling water has no contact with production chemicals at any stage and, therefore, does not become contaminated. The water taken from waterbodies for cooling processes (and returned to the water body) is not treated as water consumption.
  • Minimizing environmentally harmful emissions into wastewater and ensuring that emissions remain below the permit limits where applicable. In our emission control processes we use the best available techniques (BAT).
  • Supporting water-related projects locally with commitments and/or donations when feasible.

Nokian Tyres also influences water topics and other sustainability matters through our memberships in the UN Global Compact, ETRMA, USTMA, and the Finnish Chemical Industry Federation. We build employee awareness by providing training to employees on water efficiency and by handling the topic in our sustainability communications.

Water and wastewater

Our tire manufacturing processes use large quantities of cooling water. Mainly, we use municipal water for process cooling in circular system and after usage deliver it to a wastewater treatment plant. In our Finnish factory, we take surface water for cooling from the nearby Nokianvirta river and discharge it back into the river after use. The cooling water has no contact with production chemicals at any stage and, therefore, does not become contaminated.

In our factories we take regular samples from the cooling water and from the wastewater conveyed to the municipal treatment plant in order to verify the water quality. Both the wastewater conveyed into the municipal sewage system and the cooling waters has been practically clean.

In 2020, water risk assessments were made for our production sites, and in 2023 the assessments were updated. The assessments were done using WWF’s water risks filters, and they confirm that our water related risks are minor and that we don’t operate in water stressed areas. We will update water risk assessment once in every three years. Assessment of water risks related to our supply chain were started by assessing risks based on geographical locations.
