Caring for local nature
Nokian Tyres has two local nature conservation projects that our employees carry out yearly as volunteer work.
Removing harmful alien species
One of the yearly actions is to weed out lupins from the Finnish tire factory and headquarters area, as lupin is a harmful alien species in Finland. This also offers the opportunity to engage employees in biodiversity work, as they are able to participate in the project during their workday. It’s up to them and their schedule whether they participate for 30 minutes or four hours – all efforts have an impact.
The main focus of the lupin weeding is on the garden of the former factory director's house. Built in 1925, the house still stands behind our factory by the river. Even though times have changed, the garden is still full of life as it is favored by bees and other pollinators. It houses plants that are valuable for biodiversity, and the trees provide local birds and bats shelter and a nesting site.
In addition, to support and increase the factory site’s biodiversity, some lawn areas have been replaced with wildflowers.

Taking care of a meadow in support of the region's biodiversity program
To preserve the habitat of native Finnish flowers and other plants, Nokian Tyres adopted a meadow located about 50 km from the company headquarters. The meadow is an endangered traditional biotope, and we are committed to taking care of it in support of the local region’s biodiversity program.
Traditional meadows are disappearing, as they have been turned into forests or built on, or because they are not taken care of. A yearly volunteering event for employees is organized to scythe the meadow.
