Human rights at the core of our values
At Nokian Tyres, it all comes down to our core value: we care. That means respecting and taking care of each other, the customers, consumers, and partners. In the human rights evaluations, we consider, among other things, our own employees, the supply chain, as well as customers and end users.

Nokian Tyres has been a member of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) initiative since 2015 and follows the ethical principles of the initiative. The company is committed to acting in the manner required by the UN’s Guiding Principles for Business and Human Rights, and to following the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work.
The Code of Conduct outlines our principles: We respect human rights and treat all individuals equally. We value diversity and do not allow any form of discrimination, harassment, or bullying. Everyone is responsible for acting fairly and creating a pleasant, inspiring work atmosphere.
Developing a safe working culture inside Nokian Tyres is a continuous, prioritized topic. All aspects, including psychological and physical safety, must be in place to have a solid safety culture. This guides the development of the safety of the work environment as well as of the procedures and management models. Nokian Tyres embraces diversity and advances an inclusive and equal working culture and aims to empower the employees to be active members in the organization.

We also expect our suppliers to share the aspiration for a more socially sustainable supply chain and for promoting decent working conditions. To drive these topics in the supply chain, Nokian Tyres has a Supplier Code of Conduct, which expects the suppliers to commit to respecting human rights and prohibits discrimination and the use of child labor or forced labor, among other things.
Finally, when it comes to the consumers and end users of the products, safety is Nokian Tyres’ priority. We aim to create the safest tires for all conditions. As a tire manufacturer, we must ensure that the tires that we develop, produce, and market are verifiably safe to use and that they meet the quality requirements as well as the expectations of customers and end users.
Conducting Human Rights Due Diligence
In 2023 we formed an internal human rights working group. The working group reviewed our Human Rights Commitment, and defined and described the human rights due diligence (HRDD) process. Also our approach to human rights and needed actions were defined, and a road map was created.
The HRDD process is conducted every other year or in case of major changes in business. It is
- systematic, structured and timely
- connected to the company risk management process
- transparent
- based on best available information.

Identify and assess
What risks to people could we be connected to? Which ones will we focus on?
Integrate and act
Which actions should we take to address the risks?
Track and monitor
How do we follow up that our actions are working?
Communicate
What and to whom do we need to communicate?
Considering our whole value chain
In 2023, we conducted our most recent human rights assessment, which covered our whole value chain: our own employees, our supply chain, customers and end users, and local communities.
| Own workforce | Value chain | Customers and end users | Local communities |
Salient human rights | Health and safety | Health and safety | ||
Other recognized | Just and favorable working conditions • Anti-harassment • Anti-discrimination | Actively preventing child and forced labor | Health and safety Privacy | Health and safety Privacy |
