We aim high
Sustainability is a part of our company’s culture, strategy and goals. The management of sustainability is driven by our values: we care, drive innovation and deliver high results together.
Our sustainability work is guided by our sustainability roadmap that has seven different development areas. Our sustainability goals are aligned with the roadmap and also include the CO2 emissions reduction targets approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
In 2020, Nokian Tyres became the first tire company to have its ambitious targets for reducing CO2 emissions approved by the SBTi, and as we reached one of our key targets already in 2023 seven years in advance, the targets were updated in 2024. The development of different sustainability aspects is reviewed regularly at the management meetings.
Both the financial and non-financial targets that have been approved by the Board of Directors can be found on the page Strategy and targets.
Climate actions
The near-term greenhouse gas reduction targets
- Reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 42% by 2030 from 2022 base year
- Reduce Scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services, upstream transportation, and distribution by 51.6% per ton of product purchased within the same timeframe.
The long-term targets to reach science-based net-zero GHG emissions across the value chain by 2050
- Reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 90% by 2050 from 2022 base year
- Reduce Scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services, capital goods, and upstream transportation and distribution by 97% per ton of product purchased within the same timeframe.
Other goals beyond 2025
- Carbon neutrality in 2045 (common goal for Finnish chemical industry)
- Energy efficiency target: 2.75 kWh / kg by 2030
Environmental actions
- Zero waste to landfill from our factories.
- Regulated emissions to air: Fulfill all local authority requirements.
- Avoiding environmental accidents: O accidents per year.
- Material recovery rate of factory waste (instead of burning into energy): Increase 10% (2020-2025)
- Renewable ground water and municipal (third party) water use in our factories: Maintaining the industry leading water efficiency below 2 l/product kg and improving it with minimum 1% annually

Nokian Tyres' science-based targets
Target | What it means | Examples of actions |
We reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the energy that is purchased and produced: • 42% by 2030 • 90% by 2050 (compared to year 2022) | These emissions are mainly created in our own production facilities during the tire manufacturing process and in heating and airconditioning the facilities. | Most of the energy that we purchase is low-emission or zero-emission and produced with renewable forms of energy. Improvements in energy efficiency will also reduce emissions. The zero CO2 emission factory in Romania is a benchmark for the tire industry. |
We reduce greenhouse gas emissions from purchased goods and services, and upstream transportation and distribution, and in the long term also from capital goods: • 51.6% per ton of product purchased by 2030 • 97% per ton of product purchased by 2050 (compared to year 2022) | We expect our raw material producers to implement their own actions in order to reduce emissions. As for logistics, achieving the target requires emission improvements from road, train, marine and air transportation. | Raw material producers will transition to zero or low-emission energy and improve the energy efficiency of the entire production process. We choose raw materials with a lower carbon footprint. In logistics, increasing the share of biofuels, improving the efficiency of engines, and optimizing routes further are key methods. |
