Fundamentals

We make tires for people who value safety and sustainability. Nokian Tyres has been a member of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) initiative since 2015 and is committed to developing its business in a sustainable way.

Our everyday improvement of sustainability is guided by the Group’s sustainability goals and the road map plan that we update yearly. The road map includes seven development areas and more than a hundred tasks and projects.

A global value chain

A tire is a truly global product: the rubber sourced from rainforests is merged with industrial components in our factories, and finished tires are then shipped internationally. Approximately 89 percent of a tire’s carbon footprint is generated during its use, which means that the users of our products are an important link in the value chain.

Our material topics

We are committed to minimizing the company's negative impacts and maximizing its positive impacts on the economy, environment, and people. An essential part of driving this positive change is understanding how our stakeholders view sustainability and which sustainability topics are relevant for society and our business.

Our material topics are determined by conducting materiality assessments every three years. The current material topics cover e.g. climate and biodiversity, resource use and circular economy, the health and well-being of our own workforce, human rights of the value chain workers, product safety, and ethical business conduct.
