Joining the SDG Flag Day campaign in support of the UN Sustainable Development Goals

This week we join the global SDG Flag Day campaign to show our support for the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that guide global action on sustainable development until 2030.

Ten years ago the member countries of the UN adopted the UN Agenda 2030 for sustainable development. At the core of the Agenda are 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs provide a tool to examine sustainable business in the long term.

The SDG Flag Day, held annually on the anniversary of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, reminds of the collective action needed to meet the goals by 2030. United Nations’ Global Compact is the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative. Nokian Tyres has been a member of the UN Global Compact since 2015.

the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

We have determined seven SDGs that are important for the company, and we align our actions with them to help drive progress toward a more just, inclusive, and environmentally responsible world.

Examples of our actions for SDG 3:

👩‍🏭 We work systematically to reduce occupational accidents, eventually aiming for an accident-free workplace
🧪 We work to avoid the use of harmful substances, thereby minimizing risks to occupational health in production and warehousing. Nokian Tyres’ products do not contain any substances of very high concern as defined in the EU’s REACH regulation
🚗 We improve road safety by creating safe tires for all conditions. Nokian Tyres has not had a significant product recall in over 20 years

Examples of our actions for SDGs 5 and 8:

🙂 Nokian Tyres Code of Conduct outlines our principles: We respect human rights and treat all individuals equally
✅ We expect our suppliers to share the strive toward a more socially sustainable supply chain, where decent working conditions are promoted
🔎 We have conducted supplier audits since 2016 to be able to drive sustainable development in our supply chain

Examples of our actions for SDGs 9 and 12:

🏭 Our new factory in Romania is the first full-scale zero-CO2-emissions tire factory in the world
🌿 All Nokian Tyres' tire production waste is utilized, so there has been no waste to landfill from our global tire production after 2021
🛞 Our goal is to increase the share of recycled or renewable raw materials in tires to 50% by 2030. At the moment we’re halfway there.
♻️ We promote tire recycling. Almost 100% of used tires are recycled in the Nordic countries and around 95% in Europe

Examples of our actions for SDG 11:

🛞 We improve road safety by creating safe tires for all conditions, with enhanced grip and handling
🌿 All Nokian Tyres' tire production waste is utilized, so there has been no waste to landfill from our global tire production after 2021

Examples of our actions for SDG 13:

🌍 We reduce greenhouse gas emissions according to our science-based targets and aim for net zero by 2050
🏭 Our new factory in Romania is the first full-scale zero-CO2-emissions tire factory in the world
✅ In 2024 our production emissions were 153 kg CO2e per ton of tires produced, while most tire manufacturers operate at the level of 600 - 1200 kg CO2e / product ton
