Our memberships

We follow the law in letter and spirit in every country of operation. Our Code of Conduct provides every employee with instructions on what to do in case they see something in our operation that may conflict with the applicable legislation.

As a public company, Nokian Tyres is bound by the statutory requirements and the rules of the stock exchange on the publicity of information which is relevant to the company’s business. We report on sustainability following the requirements of the EU Corporate sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD).

Nokian Tyres is a member of various industrial and employer organizations. Our participation depends on the current topics and our opportunities to offer our expertise. We are also a member of various communities and organizations that participate in the development of the legislation and political decision-making. Nokian Tyres is not involved in political activities, fundraising, or political contributions as per our Code of Conduct. Any new membership is evaluated with Nokian Tyres' Know Your Counterparty (KYC) process.

Nokian Tyres is committed to the principles of the United Nations Global Compact. We are reducing our greenhouse gas emissions and aim for net zero in alignment with the Paris Agreement. Our targets have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative, and we support Paris-aligned public policies.

Nokian Tyres Group’s policy engagement is conducted solely through industry and trade associations. The company has no direct communication with lawmakers or regulatory institutions with the intent to influence climate-related legislation. The guiding principles to manage our memberships and the associations’ lobbying activities are the following:

  • lobbying conducted by the trade association is transparent
  • Nokian Tyres’ contribution is characterized by technical expertise and knowledge concerning the tire industry and other related sectors, focusing on products, safe and sustainable mobility and innovation.

Some of our key associations include climate matters in their agenda. For example, the Chemical Industry Federation of Finland strives for the industry to be carbon neutral by 2045, and ETRMA supports European climate targets and drives the industry’s contribution to the Green Deal. Some of the key associations focus on technical matters (e.g. standardization of tire test methods) without policy level engagement to climate matters. Nokian Tyres will engage further with the few associations that have not clearly specified their climate-related commitments to understand their position better.

We aim to ensure that the associations’ public policy engagement and lobbying are consistent with our overall climate change strategy and thus Paris-aligned. This is done by reviewing and commenting on the associations’ replies to public consultations and their other lobbying-related activities. Our sustainability experts also represent Nokian Tyres in some of our key associations, such as the Chemical Industry Federation of Finland and ETRMA, to monitor developments and to contribute to sustainability matters. In 2024, no lobbying activities that would be contradictory to the Paris Agreement were brought to Nokian Tyres’ attention.

Nokian Tyres will not support lobbying of legislation and regulation that is not Paris-aligned. If lobbying activities of a trade association are not aligned with the Paris Agreement or they otherwise contradict the company’s principles, Nokian Tyres may do any of the following:

  • influence the activities of the trade association
  • communicate its dissenting opinion with the trade association
  • terminate its membership with the trade association.
