The unique winter solution for North American drivers

For more than 25 years, we have offered a unique solution for North American drivers facing unpredictable winter weather: the all-weather tire.

Winter in North America is anything but predictable. From the frigid, snow-packed northern regions to the subtropical climates of the south, conditions vary dramatically across the continent. Even within the same country, drivers can experience everything from icy roads to mild cold snaps. And with climate patterns shifting, both the U.S. and Canada are seeing more frequent temperature swings above and below seasonal averages. The Climate Extreme Index by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reveals a 58 percent increase in severe weather events today compared to 40 years ago.

As the inventor of the winter tire, Nokian Tyres understands these challenges better than anyone. For more than 25 years, we have offered a unique solution for North American drivers facing unpredictable winter weather: the all-weather tire.

All-weather tires are engineered for areas in North America where winter varies between rain, slush and occasional snow rather than months of deep freeze. They shine in regions such as the Rocky Mountains, where drivers often move between temperate valleys and snowy peaks. They are also perfect for those who travel across states during winter.

This makes them a true four-season option for drivers in North America

All-weather tires are certified for winter driving, and their rubber compounds stay pliable in cold temperatures below 7°C (45°F) for reliable grip, while still performing well on hot summer roads. This makes them a true four-season option for drivers in North America who experience mild winters but still need safety in snow and slush.

Despite these benefits, awareness remains low. A recent YouGov survey conducted on behalf on Nokian Tyres of more than 1,000 U.S. and Canadian drivers revealed that only 30 percent of them know the key difference between all-weather and North American all-season tires: only all-weather tires are certified for safe use in snow. This certification matters. It’s the assurance that the tire has been tested for winter performance, and the proof of that is the Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) symbol on the sidewall.

While all-weather tires bearing the 3PMSF symbol are a strong choice for regions with variable winters, it’s important to remember that in areas with prolonged icy roads and heavy snowfall, dedicated winter tires remain the safest option. However, for millions of North American drivers all-weather tires offer a smart, versatile solution to unpredictable winter weather. They deliver safety, convenience, and peace of mind 365 days a year.
