Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta winter tires and Nokian Tyres Hakka summer tires receive the Key Flag symbol as proof of their Finnish origin

Nokian Tyres plc Press Release June 10, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. EEST

The Association for Finnish Work has awarded the Key Flag symbol to Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta passenger car winter tires as well as to Nokian Tyres Hakka passenger car summer tires. The symbol can be awarded to products manufactured or a service produced in Finland, with a minimum domestic content of 50 percent of their break-even cost.

“We are proud of our Finnish heritage and our northern knowhow which is represented in our premium Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta and Nokian Tyres Hakka products. The Key Flag symbol is a sign of Finnish work and very well known among consumers. We are extremely happy to be able to present it next to our tires manufactured in Finland for Nordic drivers”, says Ville Nikkola, Head of Sales, Finland from Nokian Tyres.

Hakkapeliitta winter tires and Hakka summer tires are manufactured at Nokian Tyres’ factory in Nokia, Finland where the company’s global R&D is also situated. The products are also tested in Finland.

Nokian Tyres has been awarded the Key Flag Symbol previously for the company’s heavy machinery tires, wheels and retreading materials also produced in Finland, and the company's truck and bus tires have the Design from Finland label as a proof of their Finnish design origin.

Safety from Finland since 1932

Nokian Tyres has a long heritage as the expert of Northern European driving conditions. Founded in 1898, the company begun manufacturing tires in 1932. The first tire was known as the Kesäpinta (Summer tread). In 1934, Nokian Tyres invented the world’s first winter tire and two years later in 1936 the first Hakkapeliitta branded winter tire for passenger cars was brought to the market.

Modern Hakkapeliitta studded and non-studded winter tires as well as the Hakka summer tires rely on decades of cumulated innovation work. They are designed at the Nokian Tyres R&D center in Nokia, Finland where the company also has a test track. The winter testing is done at the company’s test center in Ivalo, Finnish Lapland. Both the Hakkapeliitta winter tires as well as the Hakka summer tires are designed specifically for the Nordic driving conditions.

“The Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta winter tires as well as the Nokian Tyres Hakka summer tires are designed to withstand the challenges of their northern home: the harsh winters with ice and snow as well as the summer months from the first sub-zero mornings of the spring to the heavy rainfalls of autumn”, describes Nikkola.

Made in Nokia

Both Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta winter tires as well as the Nokian Tyres Hakka summer tires represent the premium quality Nokian Tyres is known for. “The top priority in our innovation work is safety, but the sustainability of the products is also very important for us”, Nikkola says.

“The Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta winter tires are already a legend of Nordic winter roads, and are, just like the Nokian Tyres Hakka summer tires, still made within the same factory walls in Nokia as their predecessors in the 1930’s”, Nikkola sums up.

The Nokia factory has been modernized throughout its long history. Today all electricity used at the factory is from CO2-free sources, and most of the steam is also produced with CO2-free fuels. After the year 2015 there has been no waste to landfill from the tire production of the Nokia factory.

The Nokia passenger car tire factory has also obtained the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS. With the certification, Nokian Tyres is able to introduce new sustainable, ISCC PLUS certified raw materials in its tires manufactured at the factory.
