Beyond tire manufacture, a key location for our research and development

The tire factory in Nokia, Finland plays a crucial role not only in manufacturing but also in product development. It serves as a key location for centralized product development, prototyping, and test runs.

The role of the Finnish factory in our manufacturing network is to develop and manufacture tires for the Nordic countries, as well as to support North America and partly also Central Europe. The factory is a center of expertise in winter tire technology, and one of its special areas of expertise is studding technology.

Key facts

The factory in Nokia produces summer tires, winter tires and heavy tires for all Nokian Tyres markets.

Beyond production, it is a key location for our research and development where we develop new products and test them.

The factory will account for approximately 35 percent of total passenger car tire production once the factory in Romania has reached its maximum capacity in 2027.

In 2022, three hectares next to the factory were acquired. By acquiring the land and nearby industrial property, the company intends to secure future development opportunities at the Nokia factory.

Committed to continuous improvement

The commitment to continuous improvement is evident in the excellent productivity and efficiency of the Nokia factory. Investments in increasing the capacity of passenger car tires were completed in 2023 when the factory also reached record-level productivity.

In the production of passenger car tires, the production volume grew by a staggering 150 percent in 2020–2023. Measured in kilograms, this means a growth of over 200 percent. Heavy Tyres’ production also set a productivity record in 2023, and its capacity has been gradually increased and will continue to grow.

The more efficient the production process, the greater share of materials can be utilized, and the less waste is generated. In this respect too, the factory achieved a record last year by significantly reducing production waste. Less than 3.5 percent of production of passenger car tires ended up as waste at the Nokia factory, marking a 35 percent improvement during the last three years.
